Developing Hydrogen Ecosystems

SKILL

The goal of hydrogen mobility ecosystems is to decarbonize a region by creating a seamless link between low-carbon hydrogen production and hydrogen-powered mobility users—from electrolyzers or tube trailers to engines!

A hydrogen ecosystem integrates an entire value chain, spanning from production to end-use, including land allocation and refueling stations:

  • Upstream: Securing renewable energy sources to power electrolysis, along with potential financing solutions for the project.
  • At the heart of the ecosystem: The users. Ensuring a successful ecosystem depends on identifying captive and distributed fleets, securing vehicle subsidies, and engaging users to adopt hydrogen-powered mobility.
  • The final link: The hydrogen refueling station. This infrastructure must be strategically located at the crossroads of major transport flows, on a site large enough to accommodate multiple users. The station must be designed, built, operated, maintained, and upgraded to support the long-term growth of decarbonized mobility.

This is precisely where Atawey steps in as your trusted partner. With our technical expertise and real-world experience, we co-develop and co-invest in projects to accelerate hydrogen mobility. Thanks to our range of configurable and scalable hydrogen stations, we provide our partners with high-performance, reliable, and cost-efficient infrastructure, ensuring fast and optimized deployment.

Arv’hy : projet d’écosystème de mobilité hydrogène au cœur de la vallée de l’Arve

ARV'HY

The ARV’HY project was created to tackle a major challenge: decarbonizing one of France’s most polluted valleys.

Launched in February 2024, the project brings together five committed local partners: LSBN, Atawey, Axpo, Crédit Agricole des Savoie, and Jean Lain Mobilités.

As part of the Territoire d’Industrie action plan for the Arve Valley, ARV’HY aims to promote clean mobility through:

  • A renewable hydrogen production and distribution station.
  • Easy access to hydrogen-powered vehicles, available for lease or purchase.

This initiative is designed to reduce CO₂ emissions and fine particulate pollution, aligning with France’s target to phase out internal combustion vehicle sales by 2035.

Questions & Answers

Hydrogen Ecosystems

Q&A

A hydrogen mobility ecosystem is a structured network built on four essential pillars to enable the adoption and expansion of hydrogen as a sustainable energy solution:

  1. Energy Supply:
The ecosystem integrates hydrogen production, often sourced from renewable energy (solar, wind, etc.), to provide clean and locally produced fuel.
  2. Land & Infrastructure Planning:
Developing hydrogen stations and supporting infrastructure requires strategic land-use planning, ensuring accessibility for users while complying with local regulations.
  3. End-Users & Applications:
Hydrogen ecosystems cater to a wide range of users, from intensive mobility (captive fleets like taxis, vans, and last-mile delivery) to heavy-duty transport (trucks, buses, waste collection vehicles, etc.). The key is to align supply with demand, maximizing environmental impact.
  4. Refueling & Distribution Infrastructure:
Hydrogen refueling stations, storage solutions, and distribution networks are designed for reliability, high availability, and seamless integration, ensuring efficient hydrogen supply.

Like pieces of a puzzle, these four pillars work together to create a cohesive and sustainable hydrogen ecosystem.

Developing a hydrogen ecosystem delivers multiple advantages:

  • Lower CO₂ emissions and air pollution: By replacing fossil fuels with hydrogen, businesses and municipalities reduce their carbon footprint while improving air quality.
  • Energy independence & optimization: Local hydrogen production ensures greater energy autonomy and resilience.
  • Advancing clean mobility: Hydrogen ecosystems encourage the adoption of zero-emission vehicles, particularly for logistics, public transport, and heavy-duty applications.
  • Boosting local economies: These projects support regional development, shorten supply chains, and strengthen local industries.

Atawey offers end-to-end support to help deploy successful hydrogen ecosystems, including:

  • Feasibility Studies – Assessing local needs and defining the right infrastructure.
